Hungarian wines & fröccs

Let’s dive into the history of one of the most popular drinks in Hungary. In Hungary we love to drink and love to party, and for these parties we often use wine.

The Hungarian wine-drinking culture goes back decades, or even centuries, but we can say for sure that nowadays it’s blooming.

Quality wine is a strength of Hungarian culture and alcohol sortiment. It’s not a surprise since we have several wine regions and parts of the country where the winemaking made it to a whole other level.

Hungary’s most intriguing wine regions are Tokaj, Villány, Eger, Balaton and Nagy Somló. We can proudly say that Tokaj is world famous, their aszú type of wines made it to the most upscale lists of the wine drinking society.

A long time ago, more than one hundred years ago, Hungary was one of the most important wine producers in the whole of Europe. That’s right, they had a bigger impact than France or Italy. Every royal court, kings and queens in Europe clinked glasses filled with precious gold Tokawine, while other lush Hungarian whites and reds were sold and enjoyed throughout Europe.

What types of wines can you taste during the pubcrawl? So, actually, what Hungarian people drink in the pubs is not exactly pure wine, but wine with some sparkling water or soda. This can sound weird at first, but believe us, Hungarians know what is a good kick off drink in the party. Fröccs, as we call it in Hungarian, is probably a disgrace for all the wineries and all the wines, because you cannot actually taste the wine, it only has a lighter taste.

Spritzer is like letcho, so on the one hand it belongs to the summer and on the other hand it can be made in so many ways that the number of variations are almost endless. The “genre” of fröccs became popular quite a while ago. Wherever you want it, be it a festival, a garden party, a school reunion, a drink with friends, a refreshing drink on the terrace during the day or in the evening this will work just fine. As well as on our pub crawl.

Although easy to make, there are a few basic rules to keep in mind, as the secret to good fröccs lies in the ingredients and the right consumption temperature. If you manage to choose the right wine with it, the pubcrawl will end well and you won’t have a hangover the next day. We serve them ice cold in, even in the winter.

Whatever spritzer you drink, it is important to cool both your ingredients – both the soda and the wine, as in addition to bubbles and the right style and quality of wine, the temperature of the fröccs is very important. The colder the better!

And what is the right choice out of all the Hungarian wines? Olaszrizling and rosé are the two go to fröccs ingredients. With these you cannot go wrong.

Ask the bartender for some recommendations, and make sure you won’t miss a good fröccs on our pubcrawl, while in Budapest!
